Rahat Lukum at Lokum London
by Christine Barnett. London, UK
The Lokum Istanbul brand embarked on a journey to bring back the Ottoman-Turkish cultures’ centuries old delicacies and habits that no longer enjoy the popularity they deserve. Project Lena was invited to sample the delicacies wrapped through centuries of traditions in modern day London. Lokum specializes in Turkish ”delights” among which are Rahat lukum, akide candies and cologne water made with the same sumptuous flavours. Rahat Lukum is a simple confectionary made with gel of starch and sugar, yet it’s merged with rosewater, mastic or common lemon flavours and dusted with sugar. “Project Lena” was treated to a tour of the boutique, as well as delicate Turkish delights wrapped in thin layers of pastry. Never having tried anything like this before, we were surprised by the balanced and subtle waltz of sweet jelly and slightly crispy pastry on offer, but it captivated the dance floor of our taste buds. The boutique itself is neatly hidden in Walton St which is home to the best places in London. The atmosphere is tempered with sweet smelling candles, an array of the same flavours as the Turkish Delights. Turkish cultural items that no longer receive the respect they deserve have come back to life, and are beginning to regain their popularity in the national and international markets. All of the merchandise is christened with Turkish values, where gifting was customary and recession was a few centuries away. Lokum boutique invites you into the world of pleasure and abundance where the original characteristics of the gifts have been lost to modern times , but in fact each of these are values that help people to feel happy. As such, Zeynep Keyman, creator of the brand redesigned these values adding these authentic and essential characteristics to modern life. Each of Z. Keyman’s “Lokum Istanbul” stores is a lifestyle store that aims to appeal to five senses of human being with their unique design and adaptations. No other store offers you your favorite flavours in an appealing array that touches your senses and seduces them? The main philosophy of the brand is to bring back the delights, flavors, knowledge and beauty of offering gifts and treats of the Ottoman-Turkish culture to modern life and setting their direction for the future based on its unique interpretation. www.lokumistanbul.co.uk
