La Super Rica Taqueria

La Super Rica….if your gonna be bad……

Next time you’re in Santa Barbara make it a point to visit La Super Rica Taqueria. For those of you unaware of this hidden gem, the family owned bastion of sinfully good Mexican Street food should be on your list of places to visit. Drop the diet or health concerns for a minute and splurge. I usually make it a point to hit La Superi Rca whenever I drive up the coast to SF. Their secret weapons, besides quality fresh ingredients, are the charcoal grill and the made to order tortillas. The meats and pasilla peppers are fired up and are infused with a smokey goodness before they a chopped up and placed in these awesome Tortillas. Too die for! I guarantee your view of Mexican food will change. There’s a sophisticated touch in this small kitchen that delivers simple fresh food. I had the Super Rica especial( #16) grilled marinated pork with grilled peppers and cheese with 2 fresh Tortillas. The surprise of the evening was the “Dover Sole” tamale with Pasilla strips topped with cream, other wise known as Tama De Pescado. Amazing…. yes Dover Sole…. how’d that happen? Unexpected at your local hole in the wall, eh?  I mentioned my delight to the owner who explained that on Saturday nights, every 2 weeks, the have special fish on offer. Not to worry if you miss that night as everything on their menu is pretty special. I finished off my gluttonous session with a totally unnecessary Tamal De Verduras, Vegetarian tamale with string beans, chayote, zucchini potato, charcoaled chiles and crema. Vegan I suppose if you had them hold the crema…..but why would you? Be prepared for crowds and a line if you hit it at the wrong time but it’s absolutely worth the wait. As I mentioned earlier, everything is made fresh including the tortillas, which is where the bottleneck occurs. There’s a wonderful older woman whose sole function is to mold the fresh Massa into tortillas; there’s clearly a limit to the number of tortillas one human can make at a time. Do not be afraid…go! You can substitute grilled chicken for the pork if that floats your boat and there are lots of familiar dishes to enjoy. This is real home cooking. The staff is super friendly, the place is very casual and you’ll leave satisfied. You can work out a little harder at the gym tomorrow.
